Melbourne Cup Runners Daily Update

2009 Result:

1st Shocking 9/1

2nd Crime Scene 40/1

3rd Mourilyan 20/1

4th Master O'Reilly 11/1

2/11/09: All the above horses can be backed in Forecasts or Quinellas with CentreBet for the Melbourne Cup.

2/11/09: A strong field of 24 with Allez Wonder added, another Bart Cummings horse ridden by Michelle Payne. This race looks ultra competitive, will the Aussies prevail or is the Cup  like the Ashes going to England.

30/10/09: Efficient has drifted alarmingly on betting exchange Betfair and with Aussie firm CentreBet. It is always worth trying to uncover why horses are supported or backed and the rumour is that the one time co favourite has a leg problem. We would say do not worry and if anything you now have more value.

30/10/09: We will be clearer after the weekend of the 24 confirmed runners, we then have the draw which is not all important but there are some stalls you would prefer.

30/10/09: The Mackinnon Stakes can go to Zipping at around 6/1 with CentreBet.

27/10/09: Free Bets are available on the Melbourne Cup with all the bookies. Betfair have some huge odds on the outsiders and generally are a couple of points bigger on the favourites. Click the Betfair link to place your Melbourne Cup tip.

27/10/09: Bart Cummings has decided to run Viewed in the Mackinnon this weekend. This means the 6 year old winner of the Caulfield Cup will have 3 runs in 17 days! Not a strategy favoured by the best European trainers.

27/10/09: There are 42 horses left in the 7 day declarations stage, final decs will be on Saturday.

26/10/09: Speed Gifted will not take his chance in the Melbourne Cup after trainer Freedman decided to withdraw the 5 year old after his poor run in the Cox Plate.

24/10/09: Bart Cummings takes the Cox Plate with So You Think, and says his winning run is not over. The master Aussie trainer has Allez Wonder, Dandadd, Navel Escort, Roman Emperor and last years Melbourne Cup winner Viewed all entered for the race that stops a nation on the 3rd of November.

23/10/09: Only 24 horses can line up on the first Tuesday of November and we expect to lose some more intended runners this weekend. There are still a couple more qualification races but the field is coming together for the race that stops a nation.

23/10/09: Basaltico is only rated 50/50 to get in to the Melbourne Cup after a poor run or some may consider a poor ride in the Geelong Cup.

23/10/09: The Melbourne Cup Odds are forming a familiar shape with few changes. The bookies seem happy with their book and percentages. Betfair have some interesting big odds.

Cest La Guerre from the John Sadler stable is way overpriced with the exchange. A five year old she was 3rd in the race last year. Another overpriced horse as of today is Shocking again with the exchange. Take a look at Betfair and take advantage of their prices.

23/10/09:The Cox Plate today with a few contenders lining up who may go on to the Melbourne Cup. The favourite is Whobegotyou and looks strong with the main danger Heart Of Dreams.

19/10/2009: Crime Scene has drifted for the Geelong Cup and looks up against it. The poor running of Kirkless in the Caulfield Cup has pushed out all of the overseas horses in the big Australian races. Six OClock news looks interesting at Geelong with CentreBet.

19/10/2009:Viewed will be joint top weight with Efficient in the Melbourne Cup after he ran away with The Caulfield Cup. Both horses will carry 58kg. This slightly tempers confidence behind these superstars as only the exceptional Makybe Diva has won the cup with such a big weight in recent times.

18/10/09: Changingoftheguard is the big market mover today with many firms. Back today each way at a still huge 35.0 with CentreBet.

18/10/09: The Cox Plate this weekend has one of the Ante Post Melbourne Cup favourites in Speed Gift entered. A maximum field of 14 will go to post. On Wednesday we have the Geelong Cup with Crime Scene from Godolphin and Basaltico from Luca Cumani. We suggest you have a small wager on Basaltico both for this race and for the Melbourne Cup. If he wins the price will be slashed but remember he will not be guaranteed a Melbourne Cup entry, so keep stakes small.

14/10/09: The UK bookmakers have Australian horses at the top of the Melbourne Cup Betting. Seeing that the majority of their bets will come from Europe this is very significant. By the look of their traders prices they do not expect any of the European superstars to win the Melbourne Cup. Efficient, Alcopop, Speed Gifted, Viewed are between 6/1 and 12/1 with Ladbrokes and Bet 365.

14/10/09: The Melbourne Cup market is settling down prior to the Caulfield Cup. Daffodil looks the most interesting horse to the bookmakers. Trained by Kevin Gray this 4 year old mare was just out of the money in the Kelt Capital Stakes at Hastings on her most recent outing. Prior to this she won the Windsor Park Plate under Hayden Tinsley. 20/1 with Coral but as low as 12/1 with other firms.

12/10/09: This weekend we have the Caulfield Cup with lots of Melbourne Cup pointers. Rain is forecast so we need to be looking for horses that do not mind some softer going.  Roman Emperor is a horse at a big price and an each way bet on the Caulfield Cup at 33/1 with Ladbrokes looks value.

12/10/09:Over the weekend Allez Wonder put in an impressive run when winning the Group 1 Toorak handicap. She is 33/1 with Bet 365. Alcopop is the biggest mover in to 10/1 and has been penalised twice for the Melbourne Cup after winning the Group 1 Herbert Power Stakes race. He will carry 52.5 kg but if he carrys on improving he can shoulder that burden.

9/10/2009: Cima De Troimph 20/1 with Ladbrokes was ridden on the gallops by Aussie champion jockey Damien Oliver and reported being impressed. He said the horse felt stronger than previous Cumani Melbourne Cup runners Purple Moon and Mad Rush.

9/10/2009: With the withdrawl of Profound Beauty you would have expected the market to contract. Now either many of the bokmakers were aware that the Weld horse was not going to take part and had factored that in to the other horses prices. The market moved very little which would normally be a pointer to the current joint favourites being very strong and very well thought of by the layers.

6/10/2009:Roman Emperor the AJC Derby winner seems to be being kept on the right side of by the bookies, as if they expect a big run from the horse. VC Bet are often the first to react to information and they have the Bart Cummings animal at 16/1 half the price of rivals Blue Square, interesting.

6/10/209:A grand total of 85 of the best horses were left in the Melbourne Cup after the second round of declarations. Nothing much to report from the market apart from some small Betfair movements on Shocking and Changingoftheguard, 37.0 and 64.0 respectively.

5/10/2009:Godolphins Kirkless 40/1 with Sportingbet goes for the Caulfield Cup prior to a tilt at the Melbourne Cup. The distance is a problem for the Melbourne Cup as there are major doubts that he will get 2 miles. However a bet in the Caulfied Cup looks value.

4/10/09: Speed Gifted wins impressively in the rain at Randwick. We hope some of you took advantage of the tip. We advised it at 20/1 it is now a best price 12/1 for the Melbourne Cup with VC Bet.

3/10/09: Efficient former winner of the Melbourne Cup wins the Turnbull Sakes and is cut into 12/1 with Betfred. Vigor drifts out after finishing in 13th place. Maldivian runs 4th and his odds are cut from 16/1 to 10/1 with VC Bet.

2/10/09:Under a big weight Capecover for New Zealand handler Alexander Fields ran 4th and his next race will be at Caulfield. A 40/1 chance with William Hill

2/10/09: Leading contenders take each other on this weekend in the Turnbull Stakes. Vigor is the favourite for the race at around 9/2 with 888Sport, if that horse wins the price will shorten to around 6/1 for Flemington in November.

This Turnbull race is choc a block with Melbourne Cup entries and could be very informative. Maldivian is 5/1 with Bet 365, Master O Reilly is 14/1 with Blue Square alongside other contenders Efficient,Viewed,Zagreb,Zipping.

30/09/09: Vigor is towards the head of the betting after his win in the Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington. Disappointing next time in the Underwood Stakes, will be well weighted.12/1 Ante Post with Sportingbet for the Melbourne Cup. Goes for the Turnbull this weekend.

29/09/09: Speed Gifted needs to qualify for the Melbourne Cup. He runs in the Metropolitan  this weekend. 20/1 with Bet 365 for the Melbourne Cup

28/09/09: European horses Crime Scene, Kirklees, Basaltico,Cima de Troimphe arrive in Australia to acclimitise for the Melboune Cup. Kirklees was reported to have a slight fever.

22/09/09:Mouryilan 33/1 with Blue Square and Bankable trained by Gary Moore in England look likely to take their chance in races down under. The owner of both horses is controversial Chechnyan President Ramzan Kadyrov who has shook up the Australian political class with these entries.

20/09/09: Profound Beauty has been specifically trained with the Melbourne Cup in mind.12/1 with William Hill

19/09/09: Daffodil a winner of the Windsor Park Plate. Market mover for Melbourne Cup. 16/1 with Coral
