The most successful Melbourne Cup draw is 11 with seven wins, draw 14 has six. It is a widely held view that the extremes are bad and that somewhere low to middle are the best, although the draw does tend to polarise opinion with many saying it makes no difference.

Melbourne Cup Tips - Prep Races

The Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Mackinnon Stakes are the most important prep race for the Melbourne Cup.

11 horses have achieved the Caulfield Cup/Melbourne Cup double and many more have been placed in the Caulfield Cup before winning the Melbourne Cup.

The Caulfield Cup is normally run mid October and its a natural progression for the winner to compete in the Melbourne Cup. A horse who wins the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne cup will win the famous cups double.

Ethereal was the last horse to complete that cups double, in 2001.

The Cox Plate over 10 furlongs is held in late October and six horses have acheived that double with the Melbourne Cup. The last being Makybe Diva in 2005. The huge purse is very tempting for trainers and is considered to be the weight for age championship of Australasia.

The Mackinnon Stakes is another race to keep an eye on when looking to find a selection at Flemington.

The Mackinnon stakes is normally held on the Saturday before the Melbourne Cup, so a winner of that race may well be on a good racing weight for the Melbourne Cup.

This race was often used to get Melbourne Cup horses spot on for the big day. However it is ten years since Rogan Josh truimphed in both.
